The answers to clues which lack definition are 8 of 9 consecutive entries in a much longer sequence. Solvers should identify the missing entry, which would not have fitted into any space in the grid.?
Solvers should complete the answer box below with the entry that is missing from the sequence. There is no need to send a completed solution. Closing date for entries is midnight on January 19th. The winner will receive their choice of any two of The Telegraph All New Cryptic Crosswords Books or The Telegraph All New Toughie Crossword Books published by Hamlyn. Please note that stocks of the prize books are very low and there may a delay while fresh supplies are obtained.
Please note that, due to punitive postal charges, while the competition is open to all, the prize is only available to UK solvers.

If you do not have Java installed you can obtain it from java.com. If do have Java you may need to check your security settings to make sure that applets are enabled, especially if you are viewing the puzzle from your hard disk. In Windows XP you may be able to enable the applet by clicking on the yellow bar at the top of the window and selecting “Allow blocked content”.
