Monthly Prize Puzzle (April 2017)

A Puzzle by Radler

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

The nine pale blocks are to be ignored when entering the answers to the clues.
After completion, solvers need to insert a letter into each of those nine squares, so that they form real words, and so that the nine letters (in order) comprise three words of an appropriate four-word phrase.  The fourth word will be present in the completed puzzle.
To enter the competition, enter the four-word phrase into the box below.

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

Solvers should enter just the four-word phrase, and nothing else, in the answer box below.  There is no need to send a completed grid or solution. Closing date for entries is midnight on April 15th 2017. The winner will receive a special prize.  Mick Twister (aka Micawber) has generously donated a signed copy of his latest book of twitmericks There Once Was a Man with Six Wives: Our Kings and Queens in Limericks. As an additional bonus Mick will add a personalised limerick.  In the event of two or more entries being received from the same solver all of these entries will be disqualified, except that mistakes can be corrected by using the box below and clearly requesting that the earlier entry be withdrawn. The winner will be drawn at random from the correct entries. Editor’s decision is final.

Please note that, due to punitive postal charges, while the competition is open to all, the prize is only available to UK solvers.

Feedback on puzzles is welcomed and will be passed on to setters. A review will be published after the closing date.

As it is not possible to enter the nine letters into the interactive versions, this puzzle is probably best solved using the pdf version.
